Etymology[edit]

Unknown origin. There are several theories, none with much evidence. Possibly a diminutive of dox (dark, dusky) +‎ -ga (diminutive suffix) (similar to frox >> frocga); or a diminutive of *docce (stump, dock, doll). See dog.
