    From Old Japanese, ultimately from Proto-Japonic *miti.

    Originally a compound of (mi, honorific prefix) +‎ (chi, road, street, way).[5] The prefix mi was in reference to the (kami, god, spirit) of roads. Perhaps also cognate with *miti, a potentially road-related element found in Old Korean toponyms.[6]
